Internships for MIT and Wellesley students

MIT and Wellesley students are eligible to work at the Museum as unpaid interns or volunteers. Students may also apply through MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).

Other Internships

All students enrolled in a college or university are welcome to explore internship opportunities with the MIT Museum. The MIT Museum does not offer paid internships although Museum staff will work with a work study or other program at the student's home school to assure credit and/or payment.

Volunteering

Volunteers assist Museum staff on both short-term and long-term projects. Placement is determined once a potential volunteer's qualifications, interests, and time availability are matched with staff needs. Opportunities exist "behind-the-scenes" and during public programs and events.

Volunteer opportunities may exist in these areas:

• Archival: cataloging, organizing and storing paper materials, photographs and film
• Collections: labeling, sorting and storing artifacts; database entry
• Computer: scanning and enhancing images
• Conservation: creating protective storage containers and cleaning and repairing artifacts
• Curatorial: research support for staff
• Facilitation: enhancing visitor experience by answering questions
• Demonstrations: hands-on demonstrations for visitors of varying ages and sizes

Application Information

All volunteer and intern applicants must be 16 years of age or older, and able to work during the time when the Museum is open to the public. To apply please download the pdf application and mail to: MIT Museum Associate Director.
