A note from MIT Museum Director, John DurantThe MIT Museum’s new ground floor exhibit space has put innovation on stage, and people have noticed. In our first full year of operating the expanded MIT Museum and Mark Epstein Innovation Gallery, attendance topped 100,000 for the first time in the Museum’s history. Among the many changes that have taken place, the Museum’s acclaimed Soap Box series has moved to the Epstein Gallery’s MIT 360 program arena. The new location has been an ideal setting for the fall Soap Box series on social technologies, and we are all looking forward to the spring series on the future of solar energy. We are proud of the MIT Museum’s lead role in the Cambridge Science Festival. At the same time, we are steadily building our collections and working to improve access to them online. Our new outdoor exhibition, Luminous Windows: Holograms for the 21st Century, set for December 5, will feature the work of 6 renowned artists who are pushing the boundaries of holographic art; please come and view this fabulous exhibition after dark from the sidewalk on Massachusetts Avenue! We have great ambitions relative to our size: to preserve and showcase the achievements of the past, to interpret and debate current science, and to track the development of emerging technology. The pace of innovation demands that we stay on our toes; so, in spite of challenging times, we are busy planning now for the next phase of the Museum's development. Please consider becoming a Friend of the MIT Museum for 2009, so that we may continue to be a leader in science and technology education, with lively exhibits and thought-provoking programs. Your gift today will help sustain the Museum as a vibrant place for people of all ages to learn and explore. Thank you for your generosity and your commitment to our mission. Sincerely, |
