Animal Care Policy Stated

Animal Care
Policy Stated

(The following statement has been issued by Professor Kenneth A. Smith,
associate provost and vice president for research, and John M. Moses,
MD, chairman of the Committee on Animal Care.)

The vice president for research and the chairman of the Committee on
Animal Care are once again soliciting information that could aid MIT's
effort to maintain the humane care of animals used in research.

The Committee on Animal Care (CAC) implements a policy of compliance
with federal, state, local and MIT regulations. The CAC inspects
animals, animal facilities, and laboratories and reviews all research
using animals before experiments are performed.

Any person in the MIT community who can provide information that might
aid this process should contact the CAC at 3-9436 or Professor Smith at
3-1973. Concerns which might suggest inadequate animal care or treatment
will be handled confidentially and will be investigated by the CAC.

The CAC will report its findings to any person expressing such concerns
as well as to the Vice President for Research.
